Lilac Blossoms Cordial for Spring

AfterlightImage 25.JPG

With the weather getting warmer and warmer, Spring flowers are blooming and sharing their sweet fragrance as you walk by.

And the fragrance of lilac blossoms in full bloom can be intoxicating - in the most amazing way. So, take a deep breath in!

If you experience a lot of sweating as the weather warms up or feel the need for a grounding moment, this is the blossom for you.

It’s properties are bitter and astringent which simply means it’s great at cooling excess heat in the body and helps bring a stable + collected demeanour. However, if you tend to be more on the dry side of things (think constipation and overly thirsty), I’d say it’s best to avoid until you balance out that excess.

Foraging Lilacs

When you pick your lilacs, be sure to spread out to leave some for the wild creatures and insects that rely on them for food and shelter.

Once you’ve picked them, leave them outside so the critters can go on their merry way. Shake them off and start removing the flowers from the stems. Once you’ve done that and the critters are gone, let’s bring them inside.

Lilac Blossoms Cordial

Making your own cordial with in-season blooms couldn’t be easier. Here’s a very simple recipe for you to try:

Equal parts water, sugar, lilac flowers (leaves & stems removed). ie. 1 cup each.

Place water and sugar in a pot and heat until sugar is dissolved. Simmer for 10 minutes with the lilacs. Remove from heat. Once cool, strain the flowers and bottle up. Keep in the fridge for a few months.

To enjoy, I like to add 1 tablespoon to a glass of water or go fancy with some carbonated water and a slice of lemon.
